- do NOT stand up in the river or risk getting lodged in the rocks
- swim HARD away from protruding rocks or logjams to the raft or shore, and
- float with the current with feet downstream until an opportunity for rescue arises

Grounded in both a healthy, if fearful, respect for the powerful forces of nature, knowing what to do if tossed from the raft, along with anticipation of the thrill to come, we set off and had a rough and rousing time. Just beautiful, and all the better and safer for the excellent learning ahead of time and expert guidance and collaboration along the way. This was truly 'RAPID' learning!

Rapid Weight Loss With Very Low Calorie Diets Is Delusion

We all know that when we start dieting the weight loss during the first week is more than the coming weeks. The strict diet is the greater loss. What happens at the first week?

During the first stage of weight reduction the body use as fuel glycogen and not the fat. Glycogen is stored mainly in muscle and liver, combined with water (3-4 gr. Water per gr. The change in total body K+ was measured in 11 persons after 4 days by implementing a diet of 405 calories. From the survey results it appears that the loss of K+ was 180 mmol, corresponding to a loss of about 400 grams of glycogen. This amount of glycogen is accompanied by three or four times the water loss. The researched persons lost an average of (4 +/- 1.8) kg but it was not fat.

Other researchers have demonstrated that muscle glycogen can be reduced to 1/3 of normal levels with a low carbohydrate diet for 4 days. But then, from a diet high in carbohydrates glycogen storage increases by 6 times thus doubling the stocks. Increased glycogen storage in combination with increased water retention, leading to large and rapid recovery of weight, which was not fat.

Another study examined the effects of a very low calorie diet in 10 obese women for 6 weeks. The results showed that the average weight loss was 11,5 kg. of which 63% was attributed to loss of fat and 37% loss of lean body mass (FFM). To last case was associated with loss of water and glycogen and took place during the first 2 weeks.

CONCLUSION: In the first stage of implementing a very strict diet, weight loss is apparent and does not lead to a reduction of fat. So you do not need to applaud your body with such diets. The secret for success: proper and balanced diet combined with regular exercise, which will be implemented for a long time to become habits of life. Just follow a healthy diet plan.

An article was published in the New England Journal of Medicine about research completed by Washington University and the University of New Mexico. The twist in the tale is that the research was based on those over 65 years old. People over 55 normally report that losing weight is extremely difficult because of changes in metabolism and hormone levels.

The study took 107 stable older people all of whom had a BMI of over 30. Your BMI is calculated by taking your height and your weight and following a set formula.

  • Ideal weight is considered to be a BMI of 18 - 24
  • Overweight is considered to be a BMI of 25 - 30
  • Obese is considered to be a BMI of 20 - 35
  • Morbidly Obese is considered to be a BMI of 36 or more.

The study had four different groups to which the participants were randomly assigned. The four groups were:

  1. Control group - no changes made to their diet or exercise regime
  2. Diet only group - this group was advised on diet and given 500 to 750 calories less per day than their previous eating routine.
  3. Exercise only group - this group was given an exercise plan and they exercised three days a week. They were advised to follow their previous eating plans so there was no reduction in food calories.
  4. Diet and Exercise group - this group was placed on the diet and exercise program combined.

Many people ask me if simply exercising more will allow them to lose weight if they leave their diet alone. I normally say no. Your diet plays about 75% of your weight loss and exercise the remaining 25%.

This study found that the Control group and the exercise only group lost no weight at all. Please read that again. The exercise group lost no weight at all. We can not assume that a few extra trips to the gym are going to make up for a poor diet (or a rich one depending on how you look at it).

The diet only group lost an average of 21.3lbs and the diet and exercise group lost 18.92lbs.

Physical performance improved 10% in the diet only group, physical performance improved 14% in the exercise only group and physical performance improved 20% in the diet and exercise group.

So then what is your aim? Is it to just see the numbers go down on the scale? Or is it to feel better, look better and enjoy every day feeling as good as you can.

Writer's Question: Is Rapid Writing an Indication of a Poor Book?

Several weeks ago I started a new book. As usually, I got up at 5:15 a.m., went to our lower level office, checked email, and started writing. In no time, I had pages of copy and was well on the way to finishing a chapter. My book has nine chapters and I only have two more to go. This has me worried.

Will the executive director of the publishing company think I've done a hasty job? If I send her the manuscript too soon, she may think I haven't given the book my best efforts. But I need to submit the manuscript soon or the book won't be ready in time for the fall market. Why is this book progressing so quickly?

I've spent hours on this question and think it boils down to three things. First, I've been living the book for four years. Second, I've written articles about many of the chapter topics and these articles served as writing warm-ups. Third, I've been studying loss, grief and recovery for a long time. Though I get the grocery shopping and laundry done, my days focus on this book.

I'm obsessed with it. Worrying about the book is something I also do. Famous writers like James Michener spent years writing a book. Could I produce quality work in a few months?

For more information about writing speed I turned to the Internet and found hundreds of articles about a new trend -- speed writing. Apparently this writing approach started as a way to help students and authors cope with writer's block. Glen Ford explains the approach in his article, "Write a How-To Book -- What is Speed Writing?"

Speed writers work from a specific template or pattern, Ford explains. "They need to write quickly and produce a great deal of writing in a very short time." He thinks this writing approach is done without thought or structure. The goal is to get words on paper as fast as possible, read it the next day, and edit for spelling, grammar and rough edges.

Before I started my book I thought about its structure. Since I made a general outline with sub-points, I am not speed writing in the true sense of the term. What I am doing is writing quickly after thousands of hours of thought, self-examination, and life experience.

Dean Rieck writes about speed writing on his blog. His article, "S.P.E.E.D. Writing: 5 Tips to Double Your Productivity, is based on an acronym. The letter S stands for the topic. The letter P stands for preparing facts. The letter E stands for establishing structure and the second E stands for eliminating distractions. Finally, the letter D stands for dashing to the finish line.

After writing for more than 30 years, I follow this acronym automatically. I also practice what Reick preaches and make writing and editing separate tasks. So far, I'm pleased with the manuscript. It tells my story, the death of four family members, including my daughter, in 2007 and how I managed to find happiness again.
