Obstacles to Rapid Manufacturing
Rapid Manufacturing (RM) has gained wide spread popularity in the recent years. It is the production of finished goods with the help of chemical addition fabrication techniques. The RM is rapidly finding its use in many industries like entertainment, sports, jewelry and military. The growth in the field of rapid manufacturing has its own set of difficulties just like any other technology which hinder the process of fast pace growth of a process or an advancement.
RM uses different material for additive fabrication depending on their mechanical, thermal or visual properties. The cost of these materials for additive systems is very high as compared to other materials. There can be a cost reduction in the price of these materials with the demand or the consumption rate going up which will be possible when RM will become more popular.
Then the process of Rapid Manufacturing cannot produce parts bigger than one meter in length which is a limitation for companies into heavy industries and construction. Another obstruction in the process of RM is the removal of support materials that are used in the process designing. The removal of these materials may not be a problem for small models but arises for parts with different statistical shapes and sizes.
The materials used in RM have properties which change with time and are suitable only for prototyping. The usage of these materials in manufacturing can be a drawback as the products once made are liable to be deformed once a used material changes its property over a period of time. Thus it is required to typify the material before using it in the manufacturing process. Then the process also involves estimation of the machine cost involved ion the whole process from the beginning to the end.
The most important obstacle can be regarded as the application of Rapid Manufacturing (RM) in the processes used by various companies. The management should initiate its usage to make it a widespread technique for today it has limited usage and can increase only when people start using it for their development.
