Why Is China So Rapidly Increasing Its Military Budget?

Perhaps you've heard that China is increasing its military budget, and this should come as no surprise due to their 10% year-over-year growth for the last 30 years, and even if it slows down to only 7.5% growth during these challenging global economic times, they still have plenty of money to grow their military. Indeed, one could say they have more reason to grow it now then previously. If China ever got in a war, you can bet that the United States would come to their aid, and it wouldn't be the first time in history we've saved their butt.

The reality is, China is big enough now, and their military is already large enough, that I doubt if any nation in their right mind would attempt to attack them, because if they did the Chinese people would unite in mass with hundreds of millions of Chinese signing up for military service the next day. In fact, I don't think we've ever seen a sense of nationalism like that in the history of humanity with the exception of the United States in World War II after the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, but I guarantee you we would from China if that were ever to be the case.

So if China has no real enemies, at least no enemies stupid enough to attack them, then why do you suppose that China is rapidly increasing its Military Budget? Well, it's simple; " China must increase ability to win 'local wars': Wen," which was the title of an article recently published in SpaceWar Online News on March 5, 2012. The piece stated;

"China must enhance the ability of its military to win "local wars", Premier Wen Jiabao said Monday, as Beijing grows increasingly assertive about its territorial claims in Asia. Beijing lays claim to large swathes of the South China Sea which are also claimed by its smaller neighbours, and must also secure supply routes and new sources of raw materials to fuel its booming economy."

Of course, you can imagine how Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Korea, Myanmar, Thailand, India, and the Philippines took that bold statement from China to increase its military budget by double digits in 2012. Now one might say that the US would come to the aid of any nation if China were to start a war for no reason, but you can bet that they wouldn't start a war for no reason, and that would leave us in a pickle as well, remember they are our largest trading partner, and they do hold a considerable amount of US treasury debt.

Some might say that even if China increases its military budget, it isn't even close to the amount that America spends on an annual basis - and whereas that might be true, and it is true that we have the most sophisticated military in the solar system, I would submit to you that China gets a lot more bang for their buck, then we do as they can produce weapons a lot cheaper than we can, as they have cheaper labor.

They also can have a larger standing army because they don't have to pay them as much. Indeed, I'd like you to think about all these issues consider what the potential eventualities are in the future, and tell me if you come to any interesting ideas, or have interesting comments on this topic.
